Joshua Safeek comes from Georgetown, Guyana, a small, unique country
in northern South America with a long history of colonialism and native
traditions. Safeek and businessmen like him benefitted greatly from the
country’s declaration of independence in 1966, opening the country up to
investment and free enterprise by its residents. Safeek moved to
Nashville, Tennessee and lived there for 15 years to earn his education
in business. When he returned to his hometown, the capital of Guyana, in
1997, he founded Caricom General Insurance Company in Georgetown, the
start of his business career in his native country.
Guyana
was a Dutch and then a British colony until 1966. It officially became a
republic in 1970 and received international attention in 1978, during a
particularly bizarre piece of American history. Joshua Safeek remembers
when 918 members of the People’s Temple killed themselves in Jonestown,
a settlement the cult’s leader, Jim Jones, had led his followers to
create. Jones’ bodyguards also attacked a small plane trying to escape
the insanity in the jungle, killing five people, including Leo Ryan, who
remains the only US congressman assassinated in the line of duty.
Joshua Safeek wishes that his country was known for its unique standing
in the Caribbean and South American community rather than Jonestown.
Joshua Safeek works in Georgetown to help clients and investors meet their
financial goals. His financial experience and expertise are invaluable
to his company and his customers. Safeek continues to serve his
community by donating to local and national charities as well as small
orphanages and other charitable organizations.
